Methods of Evangelism

“Christians” in Western nations have the idea that soul-winning is done inside their “church” auditoriums. While many find Christ in “church” buildings, in Bible times soul-winning was done out where the people lived. Therefore, let the cross (which is a pagan symbol anyway) not be raised, but rather the Gospel be proclaimed at the center of the marketplace, as well as well. Not a cross with an image of a dead man upon it on the wall of a “church” building! Jesus was not crucified in a cathedral between two candles, but on a cross by the Romans, between two thieves – on the town garbage heap, at a crossroads traveled by people of so many nations they had to write His title in Hebrew, Latin and Greek. The Son of God was crucified at the kind of place where cynics talk smut, where thieves curse, and where soldiers gamble. Because that is where Christ died and since that what he died about, that is where Christians can best share His message of love because that is what real Christianity is all about.

In the Book of Acts there were only two methods of evangelism: Mass (Not meaning Catholic mass), evangelism and personal evangelism. (Read: Acts 8:5, 6, . Philips’ city-wide crusade is an example of mass evangelism. When people see the word “crusade”, they immediately, think of the Catholic crusade that murdered millions of people. But, that’s not what is meant! In Acts 8:26-38 we see this same evangelist, Philip, doing personal evangelism. (Read: 8: 35, 36, Acts 20: 20, 21).

Within a century of the Day of Pentecost, theological discussion took the place of soul-winning in the church. Spiritual “luke-warmness” and apostasy resulted.By the 4th century, the Dark Ages had already begun.

It was not until the 18th century that mass evangelism began to appear under John Wesley (Founder of the Methodist church). Personal evangelism as practiced by the Church in the Book of Acts has only begun to be rediscovered in this that century! To Be Continued……..
